The
2004 UNCA Excellence in Journalism Awards
The
Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize was established to celebrate the work of
our former colleague, a correspondent for The Boston Globe, who was
killed while covering the war in Iraq in 2003.
The prize recognizes exceptional reporting on the UN in print media.
It is worth $10,000 and is co-sponsored by The Boston Globe and
the UN Correspondents Association.
The
Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize
was established to celebrate the work of our
former colleague, a correspondent for Antena 3 TV of Spain, who was
killed while covering the situation in Haiti earlier this year.
The prize recognizes superlative reporting in broadcast media.
It is worth $10,000 and is sponsored by Antena 3 TV.
The
United Nations Foundation Prize
recognizes excellence in reporting on
humanitarian and development issues. The prize is worth $10,000 and is sponsored
by the UN Foundation.
The Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Awards were
created in 2000 to reward cartoons that “enhance, explain and help direct the
spirit and principles of the UN.” The
Awards in total are worth $18,000. Ranan
Lurie, an UNCA member, is a world renowned cartoonist.
The
United Nations Correspondents Association
was founded in 1947, when the UN
first began to meet regularly in New York.
We are the legal heirs of the former League of Nations Journalists’
Association. Our 180 members
come from some 50 nations. The
awards were created in 1995 and have been presented annually ever since, except
for one post-9-11 hiatus. The
purpose of the awards is to recognize and encourage excellence in reporting on
the United Nations, its affiliated agencies, organizations and missions, world
wide.
The
2004 UNCA Citizen of the World Award Recipients
Dr
Hans Blix, the former Foreign Minister of Sweden, was most recently the head of
the UN’s weapons inspection team in Iraq.
Before that, from 1981 to 1997, he was the Director General of the
International Atomic Energy Agency in which capacity he oversaw the dismantling
of Iraq’s nuclear weapons program. He was a delegate to the UN General
Assembly for 20 years and to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva for 16.
Lakhdar
Brahimi, former Foreign Minister of Algeria, was most recently the Secretary
General’s chief envoy to Iraq in which capacity he was the principal architect
of the interim government. Prior to
that, as the UN’s top man in Afghanistan for more than 3 years, he shepherded
the formation of the post-war government, the path to constitutional democracy
and the start of reconstruction. Earlier still he led UN missions in Haiti and
South Africa.
Nicole
Kidman, an Oscar winning actress, became a Goodwill Ambassador for Australian
UNICEF in 1994 after witnessing the consequences of the genocide in Rwanda.
She is a strong supporter of humanitarian causes that affect children,
including the campaign against landmines, the plight of Romanian orphans and
after school programs for New York City kids. Her new film The Interpreter, set
in the UN, will open in February.
