& Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society Announce Publication of
“WATER CULTURE,” a Photo/Environmental Book
New York, -- /MaximsNews
Network & U.S. Newswire/ --
As part of the United Nations
“2003 International Year of Freshwater,” WATER CULTURE, a major artistic
book of photography and the environment that includes powerful written
commentary, has been released by the SKeGROUP and Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean
Futures Society.
Jean-Michel
Cousteau, son of the late ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, is the book’s
leading author.
“Water
is often taken for granted, but it touches every aspect of our lives,” said
SKeGROUP Co-editor, Marisha Shibuya.
“The main objective of WATER CULTURE is to make us more aware of one of the
most precious substances on Earth.”
The
book inspires respect for the world’s water through artistic photography and
written reflections. The themes of
WATER CULTURE include:
Every
24 seconds 100 babies are born around the world -- almost 20 of them have no
clean drinking water.
About
500,000 tons of pollutants pour into lakes and rivers
in the United States every day.
There
are more than 6,000 oil tankers roaming the seas each day, many of them in a
dangerous state of disrepair.
In
the developing countries, water-related illnesses are the leading cause of
death.
The
water table is dropping around the world. Under
the north China plain, which produces 25 per cent of China’s grain, the water
table drops by 1.5 meters a year.
Of
the world's 500 major rivers, more than half are seriously polluted and depleted
from overuse.
