REFUGEES:
by
ASHLEY BOMMER (MaximsNews.com,
U.N)
I was seven when I first saw her.
My mother unwrapped the clear plastic cover carefully, almost as
if she was unveiling a painting. I was mesmerized by the girl's
green eyes and red cloak, as fiery as the color of my own hair.
Not knowing what to say, I stood quietly, and listened to my
mother as she read me the headline. That was the first time I ever
heard the words "Afghan refugee."
Her photograph was on the cover
of National Geographic. Voiceless, but powerful, the young girl's
'haunting eyes and tattered cloak' became the face for the 2.4
million Afghan refugees - more then anywhere in the world- that
the Pakistani province of Balochistan harbored, due to the Soviet
occupation of Afghanistan.
But today, more than twenty years
later, tens of millions of refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan,
Palestine, Burundi, Liberia, Democratic Republic of Congo,
Somalia, Bhutan, Vietnam, and Azerbaijan still tremble before us.
And those countries, according to
the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees,
only represent the ten largest groups. I have been to camps
housing Turks, Kurds, Iraqis, Rwandans, Afghans, and ethnic
Albanians. This is a global crisis. Without enough aid, without
asylum, without rights, without security, these men, women, and
children are stateless, hungry and without a prayer.
I have a painting of the Afghan
refugee. Every morning that I wake, her eyes are a daily reminder
that millions of people continue to flee in terror only to be
confined in camps that for many provide no hope. Until governments
cooperate and implement policies to protect, fund and allow the
world's refugees to repatriate or return, her eyes will continue
to haunt. We must wake up. --

UNHCR
GOODWILL AMBASSADOR ANGELINA JOLIE
(MaximsNews.com, U.N.)
ANGELINA
JOLIE, on an earlier two-day visit to New Delhi, visited a refugee
woman from Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) in the one-room home
she shares with her three children. The family is among the 1,750
refugees from Myanmar under the care of UNHCR in India. The woman
told Jolie that they fled after her husband was arrested by
Burma’s military government.
Jolie
listened carefully and took notes as the Burmese refugee women told
her that they cannot return to their country as long as the military
regime remains in power. While they talked, Jolie's five-year-old
son Maddox played on the floor with Burmese children and overcame
language barriers with a contest of spinning tops. © UNHCR/K.McKinsey
