HERB SIMMENS

         Herb Simmens was recently appointed Executive Director of NJHEPS (New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability).  As Director, Herb  coordinates the efforts of the 29 member colleges and universities to promote sustainability in their curriculum, buildings, purchases, energy, and greenhouse gases.  njheps@njheps.org 

Previously, between 1993 to 2002, he was the Executive Director of the New Jersey State Planning Commission, and Director of the New Jersey Office of State Planning.

In these positions he managed “smart growth” planning for the state.  Under his tenure, the office won several national awards and the State Development and Redevelopment Plan was written and adopted by the State Planning Commission.

Herb also taught at Stockton College, and was Town Manager in Pemberton and Galloway Townships as well as County Administrator in Atlantic County, N.J. 

Herb Simmens’ educational background includes degrees from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.  He also studied at the London School of Economics.
