2010 - Tokyo, Japan - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan issues the
following statement today regarding a Visit to Japan by Mr. Anthony Lake,
Executive Director of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF):
Visit
to Japan by Mr. Anthony Lake, Executive Director of United Nations
Children’s Fund (UNICEF)
Mr. Anthony Lake,
Executive Director of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), will visit
Japan from May 11 (Tue) to 13 (Thu) with the intent of strengthening
cooperation between Japan and UNICEF.
During his stay in
Japan, Mr. Lake will meet with his Imperial Highness the Crown Prince, Mr.
Yukio Hatoyama, Prime Minister of Japan and Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for
Foreign Affairs of Japan.
He will also hold
talks with members of the Diet and will engage in events including a speech at
the commemorative event co-hosted by UNICEF Tokyo and the Japan Committee for
UNICEF.
In cooperation with
UNICEF, Japan has been extending humanitarian and development assistance to
children in developing countries and in areas affected by natural disasters,
conflict or other form of crisis.
It is expected that
the forthcoming visit to Japan by Mr. Lake will further strengthen cooperative
relations between Japan and UNICEF.

UNICEF was established in 1946 with the original aim of providing emergency
assistance to children in war-affected Europe.
In
1950’s, it reformed itself as an aid agency for children in developing
countries and disaster-hit areas, and in 1965, received the Novel Peace
Prize for its invaluable achievements.
Its
focus areas are as follows: (1) child survival and development, (2) basic
education and gender equality, (3) HIV/AIDS and children, (4) child
protection, and (5) policy advocacy and partnership.
As
of May 2010, there are around 350 UNICEF offices mainly in developing
countries.
Mr.
Anthony Lake, the Executive Director of United Nations Children’s Fund
(UNICEF):
Mr.
Lake was a Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to President Obama during the time
of the presidential campaign, and is the sixth person to hold the post of
Executive Director of UNICEF.
He
is serving a five year term beginning from May 1, 2010 and will continue
until April 30, 2015. The visit will be his first visit to Japan as the
Executive Director of UNICEF.
