Thousand
of women are being brutally raped as a tool of war in these conflicts said
U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, and “there isn’t enough movement here at the
United Nations and that is my main purpose for coming here today.”
Mass
rape in the Congo, Sudan and elsewhere has been used as a tool of war and
a way to disrupt society, she said. “This sexual violence against women
is unacceptable and must stop.”
“The
women of the Senate and the American people want action!” proclaimed the
Senator.

October 2009 - U.S. Senator
Barbara Boxer (D-CA) met today with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to urge
the United Nations to move quickly to prevent violence against women in
conflict situations, worldwide.
Thousand
of women are being brutally raped as a tool of war in these conflicts she
said, and “there isn’t enough movement here at the United Nations and that
is my main purpose for coming here today.”
Mass
rape in the Congo, Sudan and elsewhere has been used as a tool of war and a
way to disrupt society she said. “This sexual violence against women is
unacceptable and must stop.”
“The
women of the Senate and the American people want action!” proclaimed the
Senator.
Sen.
Boxer called for the creation of a special entity at the United Nations to
specifically deal with rape and violence against women as a tool of war and
personally urged the Secretary-General to quickly name a Special
Representative to oversee this issue for the international community.
In
key conflict areas only three out of five military generals who have been
involved in this activity have been removed from their positions, she said.
Earlier,
the Senator had praised US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s
leadership in passing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1888 that
creates a Special Representative of the Secretary General to lead efforts to
end conflict-related sexual violence against women and children.
Senator
Boxer stated last week, “I am so
pleased that the United States has exhibited such strong leadership in helping
end the brutal abuse of women and children around the world. The appointment
of a Special Representative will help shine a light on the abhorrent crimes
that are being perpetrated against women and children every day.”
Senator
Boxer called for the creation of such a position in a letter to Secretary
Clinton following a hearing she held in May that focused on ending rape and
sexual violence in conflict zones.
Senator
Boxer chairs the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on International Operations
and Organizations, Human Rights, Democracy, and Global Women’s Issues, and
her full letter to Secretary Clinton and detailed
action steps.
