        UNITED NATIONS - / MaximsNews Network / 03 July 2009 - Baroness Glenys Kinnock, the United Kingdom's Minister for Europe, met with her new French counterpart, Pierre Lellouche, in London on Wednesday to discuss UK - French plans to work closely together on European Security and Defence Policy, EU enlargement in the Western Balkans, and a range of EU institutional issues.

These discussions were in preparation for the UK - France Summit in Evian that will be held on 6 July between the UK's Prime Minister Gordon Brown and France's President Nicholas Sarkozy on Monday. 

A similar summit was held between the two countries a year ago when they worked together on security and defence issues, climate change and international development.

In a related event, Baroness Kinnock delivered remarks to a reception marking the beginning of Sweden's presidency of the European Union, which was held on Wednesday at the Guildhall in London.

Baroness Kinnock said she welcomed Sweden's leadership of the European Union in the upcoming six months as Europe deals with the global economic and financial crisis and prepares to face the challenges of climate change and the upcoming meetings in Copenhagen. Sweden's ambassador to the United Kingdom as well as the Lord Mayor of London were present for her remarks.   ~~~~~
