July 2008 -- General
Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi along with
other notable delegates attended the recent inauguration of the Abu Dhabi-based
Arab Water Academy.
The academy has been set up by Abu Dhabi Environment Agency in co-operation with
the Arab Council for Water and the International Centre for Biosaline
Agriculture with support from the Islamic Development Bank and World Bank.
It is
the first Arab academy of its kind.
The
academy will collectively address the issue of water shortages in the region.
The estimated cost associated with establishing the academy is US$670 million.
According
to Sheik Hamdan bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister, and HE Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin
Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water, the new academy is seen as a major
step towards creating a significant training center that will prepare qualified
and skillful workers who can help carry out the planning and integrated
management of water resources in the Arab world.
At
the inauguration of the academy, General Sheikh Mohammed reiterated the UAE's
support to all initiatives that aim to achieve Arab water security. He said the
water resources issue is acquiring an exceptional importance and that the world
is increasingly getting concerned about the availability and quality of water.
The
quality along with the quantity of water in the region has been significantly
depleted in recent years as a result of drought conditions combined with the
presence of expanded local development and rapid population growth.
