July 2008 -- The
first of several Greek tankers have begun to anchor off the coast of Cyprus –
bringing much needed supplies of drinking water to the island.
After
four years with limited rain during the winter months, the water reserves in
Cyprus are at their lowest level since 1908.
The
first tanker to arrive contains roughly 40,000 cubic meters of water. The water
is to be tested before it is fed into the island’s main water network.
Specifically,
an undersea pipeline will transport the water to the island’s distribution
network where it will then be distributed to the southern mostly Greek-speaking
section of the divided island.
Unfortunately,
problems have arisen with the water delivery from the first tanker. The 1,320
meter undersea pipeline actually falls short (approximately 3.5 meters short)
from connecting with the land pipeline which would then channel the water to a
distribution center. This snag is
now being addressed.
Once
the water transfer/pipeline system is finally in place and functioning, the next
six months will involve the daily departure of two tankers from the port of
Elefsina – bound for Cyprus.
Almost
16m cubic meters of water is actually needed in order to bring Cyprus’ water
supplies up to acceptable levels. The
Greek tanker initiative/plan will ultimately provide the island with half this amount
– about 8 cubic meters of water by November.
To
meet 50% of the island’s water needs, the Greek tanker initiative will end up
costing the government of Cyprus roughly US$60 million.
