July 2008 --
The efforts of a
Wisconsin-based Rotary Club (the Holmen Rotary Club) are contributing to the
provision of clean, safe drinking water to hundreds if not perhaps thousands of
people in a poor section of Lima, Peru.
The
club, which is barely a year old, elected to take on its first international
project after learning about a proposed project from a Rotary Club in Lima that
was seeking assistance in getting water filters to an extremely poor section of
the city.
Dean
McHugh, the chairman of the club’s international committee, had visited Peru a
number of times with his wife who is from the country.
His contact at the Rotary Club in Lima had connections in Wisconsin via
Oshkosh Truck. So the project
involving the two clubs became a good match.
The
project entails creating and distributing 250 bio-sand water filters which can
filter about 10 gallons of water per hour. The
bio-sand water filters use biological agents and a thick layer of fine sand to
filter the water. The filters represent a relatively simple and affordable
solution.
The
filters can be used by households as well as schools, orphanages and other
institutions.
Helping
to provide clean water to better address the Millennium Development Goals set up
by the UN is one of Rotary International’s top causes. The Holmen Rotary Club
raised US$7,100 for this particular Peruvian initiative which was then matched
by the Rotary District. Additional funding was secured from the Rotary
Foundation.
The
funds will be sent to Peru shortly where a local company has been contracted to
create the filters.
The
Holmen Rotary Club is now planning to explore the development of another water
project for CY2009.
