May 2008 --
Less than a month since
becoming the new mayor of London, Boris Johnson takes on the topic of water.
Mayor
Boris Johnson has elected to drop a pending lawsuit against Thames Water that
was launched last year by his predecessor, Ken Livingston.
The
lawsuit was focused on Thames Water’s proposed £200
million (US$390.8 million) desalination plant that is to be built in the East
London district of Beckton. The plant aims to ease water shortages in the
south-east.
The
former mayor claimed that the proposed desalination plant was inefficient and
bad for the environment.
Mr.
Johnson agreed to withdraw the lawsuit after Thames Water agreed to introduce a
set of environmentally-friendly measures.
According
to Thames, the desalination plant will minimize its impact on the environment by
using renewable energy to run the plant operations.
The
decision to allow the desalination plant proposal to move forward was welcomed
not only by the senior management of Thames Water but also by those government
officials who recognize the role that the new plant will perform in providing
the growing London population with an additional reliable source of safe
drinking water.
Fixing
leaking water pipes and encouraging more consumer conservation of water usage is
only a part of the ongoing solution for maintaining an adequate water supply for
expanding urban population centers.
New
sources of water need to be explored, identified and tapped in order to prevent
future shortages. Notes the new
mayor “we cannot risk London running out of water at times of drought…”
The
plant is expected to be on line by 2010.
