May 2008 -- The
Millennium Development Goals were officially established at the 2000 Millennium
Summit when 189 world leaders adopted the United Nations Millennium Declaration.
An
eight-goal plan, the MDGs include the following:
1.)
eradication of extreme poverty and hunger,
2.)
the achievement of universal primary education,
3.)
the improvement of maternal health,
4.)
the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women,
5.)
the combating of malaria, HIV/AIDS, and other diseases,
6.)
the reduction of child mortality,
7.)
the establishment of environmental sustainability including the halving of the
world population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic
sanitation, and finally
8.)
the establishment of a global partnership for development that includes an open
trading and financial system as well as the implementation of programs that
address the special needs of least developed countries.
At
a recent conference program in London organized by the UN Development Programme
and the United Kingdom, the President of the United Nations General Assembly (Srgjan
Kerim) declared that closer partnerships with the private sector are critical in
order to make more significant headway in the efforts to achieve the MDG’s by
2015.
President
Kerim emphasized the need for the business sector to explore new opportunities
and develop new initiatives that could more effectively unleash the expertise,
investment, and technological capabilities of the private sector in an effort to
support growth in developing countries.
Specifically,
Srgjan Kerim stated that private sector companies should be encouraged to
cultivate new markets in the developing world by providing goods and services
for the poorest “bottom billion.”
As
part of his presentation to this “Business Call to Action” conference
program, Srgjan Kerim highlighted a special meeting that will take place in late
September at the UN headquarters which he would convene jointly with the
Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
The
meeting will include the participation of Heads of State and other senior level
UN officials.
As
one of its goals, the meeting will seek to re-affirm the dedication and
commitment by Member States and the UN System to unconditionally meet the MDGs.
Since
partnerships with the private sector are essential for achieving the MDGs,
President Kerim noted that many business leaders would be invited to the meeting
for the sole purpose of announcing new initiatives that would champion specific
elements of the MDGs.
