May 2008 -- Two years after
it was passed into law, the Paul Simon ‘Water for the Poor” Act has recently
received funding via the recent Congressional budget allocation for FY2008.
The
Act explicitly identifies drinking water and sanitation for the world’s poor
as a primary objective of US foreign development aid.
Channeled
through the budget of the United States Agency for International Development,
US$300.0 million is to be set aside for the implementation of this Act.
It
is anticipated that the funding will be activated in the field by August or
September and will be used to support drinking water and sanitation projects to
the tune of US$2.0 million to US$10.0+ million a project within a selection of
countries that is still being determined.
While
a member of the House International Relations Committee, Congressman Earl
Blumenauer of Oregon authored the Bill.
A
senior advisor from the Congressman’s office re-enforced that US$120.0 million
of the funds will be specifically allocated for projects in sub-Sahara Africa.
