UNITED NATIONS - / MaximsNews Network / 25 April 2008 -- As part of any recent discussion focused on global water challenges (both in OECD and in developing nations), the critical issues of water efficiency, water re-use, water conservation, and sustainability are now being raised in addition to the ongoing concerns about the realistic potential for achieving the water-related MDG’s (to halve the number of individuals throughout the world without proper access to potable water and sanitation) in a timely fashion.

Given the importance of water efficiency as a required component of the global sustainability challenge, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) in partnership with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense Program will be hosting the inaugural WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Exposition. 

The program will take place in Las Vegas in early October.

Already billed as the largest conference of its kind in the world, the WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Exposition will be the premiere venue for showcasing new water-efficiency technology to industries and businesses from around the world. It will also seek to build and strengthen effective, interdisciplinary relationships and encourage leadership in the field of innovative water efficiency technology and services.

SNWA elected to spearhead the inauguration of this conference event as the result of their own recorded success when it comes to implementing sound water efficiency management practices.  

According to JC Davis, a senior spokesperson for the Authority, SNWA has one of the most aggressive comprehensive water conservation plans in place in the US and perhaps the world. 

Within the five year period (2002-2007), the population served by the Authority went up by 25% while potable water usage declined by 14.2%. 

The cornerstone of the SNWA water efficiency management plan lies with their dedicated focused efforts to diversify their water supply – pursuing other untapped sources outside of their contracted allocation from the Colorado River and Lake Mead.  

Additionally, SNWA diligently seeks to establish new water reserve agreements with neighboring authorities as well as reduce the per capita demand for water by its own customer base.  

As noted by SNWA, it’s imperative that water agencies around the world begin to take a more active effort to create both a sound drought plan and viable water efficiency/water conservation plans in order to better address ongoing challenges impacting water resource availability.
