April 2008 --
Evian Natural Spring Water has
re-enforced its commitment and dedication to the achievement of global
sustainable development via the announcement of three new initiatives.
The
world’s leading producer of luxury spring water has announced the following
new programs: the creation of the
Evian Water Protection Institute, the introduction of recycled plastic (r-PET)
for its popular bottle sizes, and the launch of a new partnership with
RecycleBank, Inc.
The
Evian Water Protection Institute will build upon the brand’s original project
with the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, expanding into the global arena.
Essentially,
the Institute will help maintain and/or restore wetlands with the aim of
promoting the well-being of local communities and improving fair access to water
resources.
The
Institute will also develop knowledge exchanges that are specifically focused on
sustainable management of water resources and encouraging local communities to
more effectively play a role in the management of wetlands.
The
Institute has already identified three areas (the La Plata Basin in Argentina,
the Jagadishpur Reservoir in Argentina, and the Bung Khong Long Lake in
Thailand) where they will help the local populations better manage their water
resources in a sustainable fashion.
It
is useful to note that Evian had previously partnered with the Ramsar Convention
on Wetlands with the creation of a program in 1998 referred to as the Danone/Evian
Fund for Water – promoting education, training, and communication for the
implementation of Ramsar’s Strategic Plan which focuses on raising awareness
on the importance and usefulness of wetlands.
The
other two new Evian programs center around the brand’s specific environmental
impact and the company’s interest to lessen its own environmental (both energy
and water) footprint – by reducing its consumption of water and energy and
addressing its production processes, packaging, and transport.
Evian
will now introduce the use of post-consumer recycled polyethylene terepthalate
(r-PET) with its most popular size bottles, the 1 litre and the 750 ml sizes.
Through
the introduction of this improved more environmentally friendly packaging, Evian
will be able to diminish its impact on the environment that has become a
challenge for many bottled beverage companies.
And
Evian will become the first bottled water company to join the RecycleBank
program which seeks to better motivate households to recycle.
RecycleBank
and Evian will achieve this goal by measuring the amount of recyclables
generating from each participating home and converting the weight into
RecycleBank Reward points.
By
offering rewards to households for their recycling efforts, Evian can encourage
like-minded consumers to lessen their individual environmental footprint and
protect the planet.
