April 2008 --
One week before the world’s
acknowledged Earth Day, it seemed appropriate to attend a presentation/book
signing for Jeffrey Sachs’ recently published book entitled “Common
Wealth”.
Released
to the public in March, “Common Wealth” addresses the necessary economics
for a crowded planet.
Essentially,
the book focuses on the vital need to pursue a new economic paradigm that is
global, inclusive, cooperative, environmentally aware, and science-based.
Future
prosperity will only be attained by implementing new strategies for achieving
sustainable development – strategies that will complement market forces,
stabilize the global population, encourage the development and use of new
practical technologies, and enable the billion poorest people to escape from the
trap of extreme poverty.
According
to Jeffrey Sachs, the issues of environment, public health, population growth
and extreme poverty are critical and are likely to become key determinants when
it comes to an existing state of war and/or peace.
Future
relationships among countries really need to be defined by a new era of global
cooperation around a set of shared goals for achieving and maintaining some kind
of level of sustainable development.
In
his presentation, Jeffrey Sachs emphasized the importance of making public
policy investments for a sustainable future – particularly those investments
that can better open the doors more
effectively within the poorer countries around the world.
And
notable in his remarks was his advice to a new US government administration that
will arrive in late January 2009. The
following recommendations were made:
-
End
the Iraq War immediately
-
End
the tax cuts
-
Invest
in sustainable technologies
-
Immediately
end the subsidies for ethanol
-
Send
a “climate envoy” around the world to show that the US is back and ready
to assume a leadership position
-
Commit
to international treaties like the Convention of Biological Diversity and
the UN Convention on Law of the Sea. Additionally, obey the Geneva
Convention
-
Invite
the Heads of State from water-stressed countries like Senegal, Chad, and
Saudi Arabia as well as Mayors of US cities that are water-challenged in
order to develop a comprehensive viable dry lands initiative
-
Contribute
to the refinancing of the UN Population Fund
-
Make
the UN-declared MDG’s an important US global policy objective for
effectively focusing on the challenges of hunger, poverty and disease
-
Create
a cabinet-level position that is focused on global sustainable development
Jeffrey
Sachs concluded his presentation by re-enforcing the need to create a world that
is safe for diversity, that better enables the various populations of the world
to live together on an increasingly crowded planet, and that more effectively
seeks to implement a plan for achieving global sustainable development.
Governments
around the world and players operating within the international development
community have a challenge to tackle.
Let’s
work together to achieve some viable results.
