April 2008 -- The Water Supply & Sanitation Collaborative Council
(WSSCC) and the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) have joined force
this year for the second edition of the WASH Media Awards.
Expecting
to attract nominees from all over the developing world, the initiative seeks to
promote awareness about water supply, sanitation and hygiene issues by rewarding
investigative journalism in print and broadcast media.
Deadline
for entries is : 15 May 2008.
Hosted
as special guests of WSSCC and SIWI, the winning journalists will be awarded at
a ceremony to take place during the Stockholm World Water Week, 17-23 August
2008.
By
drawing attention and action to the fate of the 2.6 billion people lacking
access to basic sanitation, the WASH Media Awards are in support of the
International Year of Sanitation.
The
first WASH Media Award was awarded in 2004 to Ms. Nadia El-Awady, an Egyptian
science journalist and editor of "Islam Online", for her story on the
River Nile highlighting its various threats. Five secondary prizes were awarded
to journalists from Indonesia, The Philippines, Pakistan, Ivory Coast and Peru.
A Nepalese journalist received the special "youth reporter" award that
year.
The
recipient of the 2004 WASH Media Award went on to participate in conferences on
topics of communication and environmental issues and to collaborate with the BBC
in Egypt on a documentary on WASH issues.
