••• HAITI: MEDICAL MISSION TEAM EVACUATED BECAUSE OF FOOD RIOTS: FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT by DR. NORMA MURRAY: 14/04/2008 (MaximsNews Network)

MaximsNews Network congratulates U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Peace-Keeping Jean-Marie Guehenno; Dmitry Titov; Edmond Mulet; David Harland; Luiz Carlos da Costa; Hedi Annabi; and Peter Schmitz for their incredibly rapid response to our emergency request to help the medical missionary team in Haiti. They responded in less than one hour!!

"Dr. Max Stamper [MaximsNews Publisher] forwarded Murray's memo to everyone he thought could help [U.N. Under-Secretary-General Jean-Marie Guehenno and team].

"Gangs of youth are roaming the streets with frequent gunfire being heard, tires are burning in the streets, roads are blocked, and food supply to the town has stopped," the memo said. "The group consists of middle-aged medical persons who are not equipped or trained to be involved in this type of civil unrest. Anything you can do to help evacuate them will be greatly appreciated."

Within an hour of the memo's dissemination, said Dr. Norma Murray, she received a call from Peter Schmitz, chief of staff of the U.N. Peacekeeping Force in Haiti.

He was aware of their position. He said he would try to make a plan," by Lindy Washburn in The Record of North Jersey, "How a N.J. medical team escaped Haiti".

Dr. Stamper joined family members at the Newark Airport to greet all 15 medical workers on their return flight at 3:30 AM in the morning.
