April 2008 --
According
to a recent government release, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has
announced a 57bn-peso (US$128mn) investment in regional development projects.
The
funding will support projects, programs and activities to be carried out by the
private and public sector, promoting regional development throughout Chile's 15
regions.
Projects
will include technological, infrastructure and administrative improvements to
increase productivity in the country.
Among
the initiatives to be implemented with these funds in region II is the creation
of a hydrological resources control center to optimize the sustainable use of
water, which is scarce but greatly needed by the area's inhabitants and local
mining industry.
Another
project to be financed is the implementation of a climate monitoring network in
Antarctica to control the melting of ice fields.
Other
projects include an initiative to support private investment for the
construction of a logistics service platform to facilitate trade; building new
roads to expedite the transport of goods and produce; improving irrigation to
benefit the agriculture sector; innovative research to optimize the use of
natural resources and energy; and waste treatment and technological research.
All
of these initiatives will require private sector involvement.
The private sector is anticipated to play as large a role as the
government.
The
projects will seek to promote decentralization by allowing regional governments
to decide priorities.
The
projects will also seek to boost the sustainable development of the country's
industrial and production sectors.
