March 2008 --Former U.S. senator and earlier presidential candidate Bill Bradley describes the expansion
of NATO as a “fundamental blunder” of
Russian and American politics in an important Carnegie
Council video on 23 January 2008.
“I
think it [NATO expansion] will re-divide Europe where
Europe
is now not divided,” said Bradley.
“Second,
it will poison our relations with the Russians, perhaps not irrevocably. The
Russians are not going to refuse to speak to us. But already, the kind of close
cooperation that we enjoyed during the Gulf War and made it possible for
President Clinton to pick up the phone, ask President Yeltsin to remove Russian
troops from the Baltic states, and have him exceed to his request, that kind of
close cooperation is gone,” he said.
He
also called for a fairer
U.S.
energy policy where the domestic fuel efficiency of cars would be similar
to that of
Europe
and tax policies that internalized externalities by higher taxes on
individuals using inefficient vehicles such as Hummers.
He
urged the “ethic of connectedness” in collective action and individual
responsibility, themes that are developed in his new book The New American
Story where he advocates innovative and can-do attitudes along with
honesty and transparency.
Former
U.S. Senator Bill Bradley is also an American Hall of Fame basketball player,
Rhodes Scholar and he opposed Vice President Al Gore for the Democratic Party
nomination in the 2000 presidential election. He is currently the Managing Director of Allen& Company LLC, a New York
Investment Firm.
