March 2008 -- The
Global Water Intelligence and the International Desalination Association are
combining their extensive array of resources to host a 2-day conference of
unprecedented impact and breadth. The
program entitled” Water, Finance, and Sustainability 2008: New Directions for
a Thirsty Planet” will take place in London during the second half of April
(the 21st-22nd).
Global
water scarcity is one of the greatest growing crises affecting our planet.
Unfortunately, it is not receiving the attention it deserves.
The 2-day conference program seeks to help move the issue of water
scarcity up the international political agenda. The program will also seek to
contribute to the creation of a viable sustainable blueprint for the future
management and use of the world’s water resources.
And equally as important,
the program will seek to contribute to the development and implementation of
sound long-term financial tools/instruments to better address the growing
funding shortfall that currently exists for investing in much needed
water/wastewater and sanitation projects around the world.
It
has been noted for many years that it will take at least EUROS 689 billion just
to achieve the UN outlined MDG’s for water. There is no additional figure
available to describe the extensive investment requirements needed to sustain
the water MDG’s once achieved as well as the investment requirements needed to
exceed the water MDG’s.
The
2-day program will comprise of three tracks – one will focus on the topic of
desalination that will address investment opportunities, financing models, and
sustainability; a second track will focus on sustainable financing tools for
potable water and wastewater projects; and a third track will focus on
water/wastewater project opportunities in the BRIC countries.
The 2-day program will include a keynote dinner presentation by the
micro-finance gura and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Muhammad Yunus.
The
program will also include the official launch of the Sustainable Water Alliance,
an international association dedicated to promoting sustainable water
development and increasing the value that we should place on water.
