Excerpt from a book for young children, conceived and written by the wife of the Secretary-General of the United Nations The United Nations Come along with me! by Nane Annan "The United Nations tries to prevent wars. It helps the poorest of the poor. It watches out for the children of the world. It wants to make sure that everyone will have clean air to breathe and clean water to drink. My husband is the Secretary-General of the United Nations. His name is Kofi Annan. My husband is from Ghana in West Africa. Ghana was the first country in Africa to become independent from colonial rule. My husband says it gave him a wonderful sense that everything is possible. I am from Sweden in the north of Europe. Together we live in New York, the home of the United Nations. We feel like a mini-United Nations ourselves. My journey with my husband started here in New York on our way to be married, a long time ago. You can see that his hair was still dark then!"

Nane Annan, born in Stockholm, Sweden, is the wife
of United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. She is a
lawyer and artist and she has a great interest in
understanding the work of the United Nations around the
world. She is especially concerned about HIV/AIDS and the
education of women. Mrs.
Annan was trained as a lawyer and worked in the Swedish
Court System and in various legislative projects
including the Swedish Commission on Ethnic
Discrimination. Before
moving to New York she worked as a legal officer for United
Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, in
Geneva. In
New York, between 1985 and 1996, she painted full-time and
studied at the Arts Student League, the Studio
School and painted in a studio in Brooklyn. Her art has been exhibited in New York for UNICEF and for the United Nations in Germany for a project against xenophobic violence. Mr.
and Mrs. Annan have three children.
