HUGH
PRICE, then president of the National Urban League, fields questions from
the media on human rights, with MAX STAMPER in the background. |
The
History of MaximsNews by Max Stamper (MaximsNews.com,
U.N.)
UNITED NATIONS - / www.MaximsNews.com@U.N./
- 2007 - In
1966 while on campus at Bowling Green, Ohio, my friend, Ashley Brown, spotted a
South African flag being displayed for International Day. He
explained to me the word, Apartheid.
|
The
next day we held a demonstration, demanding that the flag be removed from the
college.
After
a lot of media attention, it was removed. That was my first demonstration.
Later
that year, after reading about world hunger, I organized another demonstration.
Only this time we drove from Ohio to Allentown, Pennsylvania to the headquarters
of the Alpo Dog Food Plant.
On
a bitterly cold Thanksgiving Day we ate dog food to demonstrate that American
dogs eat better than many of the world's children.
Our demonstration was carried worldwide by United Press International.
Actually Alpo Dog food
with Beef tastes pretty good.
Someone
sent me a photo and newspaper clipping of me eating it out of a tin can that
appeared in Taiwan.

As
a student in Ohio in 1968 I worked on the Presidential campaign of Sen. Robert
F. Kennedy. In many ways much of my life has been a continuation of that
campaign -- I never stopped.
Back
in the 1960s the Black Activists and the White Activists did not talk to each
other.
We
only met together at one place: We met at my apartment because I had the only
mimeograph machine and everyone was welcome to use it.
That
mimeograph machine had freedom of speech and it got a lot of use.
In
fact, later I was sad when we had to get rid of it -- at 3 a.m. in the morning
-- because it was being sought in some type of investigation. \
But
we replaced it with a better one.
Anyone
who lived during the '60s and was not accused of Disorderly Conduct or
Disturbing the Peace should have no self-respect.
I
have the crowning gem: Inciting-to-Riot.
My
daughters get a big kick out of this now: "Dad why can't we go out and have
fun on a Saturday night?
When
you were our age, you were accused of Inciting-to-Riot at an Anti-War
demonstration. At least that is what it says in your FBI file."
Once
Abby Hoffman came to town and we had a party for him at my apartment.
When
I graduated from college my Dad's conservative, Republican law partner…a
deacon in our church... asked me, "What do you want to be when you grow up?
I
told him: "An outside Agitator."
Many
years later, Hugh Price, then president of the National Urban League, and I flew
from New York City to Baton Rouge to hold a press conference.
We
opposed the recent Executive Order by Governor Mike Foster that banned
Affirmative Action in the state of Louisiana.
The
two of us went down there to tell the governor and the media that if he did not
allow affirmative action in Louisiana we would consider withdrawing our
conference from New Orleans and then lead a national boycott of all conventions
to his state.
Hugh
and I met with the governor and then we held a press conference announcing our
intentions.
It
is quite an experience to walk into a crowded press conference in the Deep South
and have all the white racists look at you with hate.
We
were two New York guys coming down to their home, to take on their governor, in
public.
But
Hugh remained calm and kept telling me, "Don’t worry Max, the media is
here, they can't touch us." "The media is here Max, we are
okay."
Actually
I was not afraid of the governor himself – it was his friends who scared me.
At
any rate the place was packed, I introduced Hugh and he outlined our position.
The media was there. Hugh answered questions and we got ready to leave.
I
said to Hugh, "Okay, we had a good press conference.
Now, how do we get out of town?"
It
was just the two of us. I was not sure we would ever see New York City again.
Lynched
in Louisiana?
We
stepped out of the building into the bright, hot sunlight and wondered what to
do next.
Suddenly
three cars pulled into the driveway with a motorcycle cop in the lead. The mayor
of New Orleans, his aides, and numerous New Orleans police officers jumped out
of the cars and welcomed us with smiles.
They
drove all the way from New Orleans to Baton Rouge to meet us. I noticed
that they were armed to the teeth.
Marc
Morial, the two-term Mayor of New Orleans and later the President of the U.S.
Council of Mayors was the son of the first Black mayor, Dutch Morial. I
have cherished his friendship ever since he took us to the airport.
Governor
Mike Foster later rescinded his own ban on affirmative action.
The
National Urban League had a great conference in the Big Easy.
And
Marc Morial named Hugh Price and Max Stamper, "Honorary Citizens of New
Orleans."
Today,
Marc Morial is the President of the National Urban League. And I am proud to say
that he writes an opinion column to the United Nations and the media every
single week on www.MaximsNews.com.
MaximsNews.com
is my news network for the International Community.
I
love being an outside agitator. And that old mimeograph machine has become
Digital!
MaximsNews.com
is the hottest Internet property at the United Nations.
A
newspaper Editor recently told me, "I am embarrassed every time I read MaximsNews
because you have far more authorities on the United Nations than all of us
at the New York Times put together!"
A
U.N. ambassador from South Asia said recently: "You deserve to be a voice
at the United Nations, because, you are a voice at the United
Nations."
Human
Rights is our first emphasis. We send out web-broadcasts – with full color
photos to over 30,000 people nearly every day.
Our
website receives millions of hits per year; 1.6 million hits just in one month
of May 2007 alone.
We
go to over 8,000 media contacts worldwide -- to newspapers in Africa, Asia,
Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and North America.
We
have some of the most influential writers in the world, and important readers in
over 175 countries.
Our
contributors include a King, a Prince, a Knight, U.N. ambassadors, distinguished
activists and other outside agitators.
