Dear
Friends:
YOUR URGENT ACTION IS NEEDED FOR THE UNITED
NATIONS POPULATION FUND (UNFPA) !
PLEASE
CALL AND E-MAIL CONGRESS TODAY!
SUPPORT
THE “CROWLEY PROVISION” IN THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE
AUTHORIZATION (HOUSE RESOLUTION 1950) FOR FISCAL YEAR 2004/2005.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
urgently needs your help to provide reproductive health services for
women around the world, and also to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
The UNFPA addresses reproductive health and
population issues by:
Ø
Working to ensure universal access to reproductive
healthcare.
Ø
Mobilizing resources for existing and future population
programs.
Ø
Promoting awareness for population and development
issues.

UNFPA
helps millions of women and teenagers, like Zohal, 16, who is now able
to study in Afghanistan.
In a July forum to celebrate World Population Day, UNFPA
officials and government leaders acknowledged the need for reproductive
rights and services for one billion adolescents worldwide.

Thoraya
Obaid, Executive Director of UNFPA, holds the rank of
Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.
She is the first Saudi Arabian national to head a United Nations
agency. See her bio, http://www.unfpa.org/ed/bio.htm.
On
Tuesday, July 15, a critical vote is likely in the U.S. House of
Representatives on the funding for UNFPA, the United Nations
Population Fund.
Rep.
Joseph Crowley (D-NY) has added a provision to House Resolution 1950
that ensures strict safeguards in family planning programs, including
those for China, and clarifies current law so that UNFPA can
receive U.S. funds.
The
Crowley amendment was approved by the House International Relations
Committee, but the “Smith-Hyde Amendment” would delete the
Crowley provision from the bill.
Please
call and e-mail your Congressional Representative immediately.
Show
your support of U.S. funding for UNFPA, and ask for a vote
AGAINST the Smith-Hyde amendment.
Please
call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3131 to be connected to the
office of your representative. If
the line is busy, keep trying or email.
You
can also find the direct number for your House member at http://www.house.gov/.
PLEASE
CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND URGE HER OR HIM TO:
OPPOSE THE “SMITH-HYDE AMENDMENT”
AND TO VOTE FOR FULL FUNDING FOR UNFPA.
For
more information, you may visit, www.UNFPA.org.
Send
this e-mail to your friends and family and ask them to join our effort.
Please
help the women of the developing world.
