Mary E. Singletary was elected President
of the National Council of Women of the
United States on 19 June 2003.
Ms.
Singletary has distinguished herself through
excellent leadership in her professional and
educational endeavors and through her
concern for social, political and economic
progress of women.
She
is a Registered Nurse, graduate of St.
Agnes Hospital School of Nursing, in
Raleigh, North Carolina and she holds a B.A.
degree in Health Education from New
Jersey City University.
Ms.
Singletary has served proudly as a leader in
family planning and the advancement of
business and professional women, locally,
nationally and internationally.
She
served as President of the National
Association of Negro Business and
Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. and
the National Family Planning and
Reproductive Health Association and
currently President of the National
Council of Women of the United States.
As
Director of the New Jersey Division for
Women, an appointment by Governor Thomas
Kean, she created a greater public awareness
regarding women’s issues through public
outreach and legislation.
Ms.
Singletary also served as the Director of
the Governor’s North Jersey Office an
appointment by Governor Christine Todd
Whitman and was accepted for continuation by
Acting Governor Donald T. DeFrancesco.
In
this office Ms. Singletary continued to
“make a difference” through constituent
relations and special projects regarding
women’s issues and concerns.
Ms.
Singletary’s volunteer service and
community involvements are wide and diverse.
Among
her many endeavors at the United Nations she
represents the National Council of
Women/USA, International Council of Women,
National Association of Negro Business and
Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc., and
is the International Coordinator for
Women of Color Program for the Zeta
Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
She
is also the former Secretary for the NGO
Committee on the Status of Women and
Board member of the NGO Committee on
UNIFEM.
She
has served on the Township of Montclair
Planning Board, New Jersey Commission on the
Status of Women, Girl Scouts of Greater
Essex County and the YWCA of North
Essex.
Ms.
Singletary led a delegation of Business and
Professional Women to the Fourth World
Conference on Women, Beijing China.
During the conference she convened a
four-hour symposium entitled “A Global
Prospectus - Building Bridges of Education:
Sharing and Caring”.
She was the Team Leader for a group of NGO UN Representatives
to the World Conference Against Racism,
Racial Discrimination, Xenophia and Related
Intolerance, Durban South Africa and
Team Leader for an NGO Delegation to the World
Conference on Aging in Madrid Spain.
Through
Ms. Singletary’s leadership a five-room
health center was built in the Village of
Apatrapa, Ashanti Region, Ghana, West
Africa.
She
was also responsible for conducting a
national Breast Cancer Education and
Awareness - Train the Trainer Program in
Ghana.
Ms.
Singletary has received numerous
recognitions and honors locally, nationally
and internationally for distinguished
service regarding women’s issues and
concerns.
Among
them she was cited by the Star Ledger
newspaper as “New Jerseyan of the
Week”, Minority Business Journal
as “One of the Nation’s Most
Influential Black Women”, Ebony
Magazine as “One of the 100 Most
Influential Blacks in America”,
Hispanic Women’s Task Force of New Jersey
as “A Pioneer for Women in the
Executive Branch of State Government”,
City News as “100 Most
Influential”, New Jersey City
University as “Alumni of the Year”
and the University of Medicine and Dentistry
of New Jersey as the “Citizen of the
Year.”
Recently
Ms. Singletary received the Daisy
S. George Award for Distinguished United
Nations and International Community Service.
