You've never seen data presented like this. With the drama and urgency of a sportscaster, Hans Rosling
debunks myths about the so-called "developing world" using
extraordinary animation software developed by his Gapminder Foundation.
The Trendalyzer software (recently acquired by Google) turns complex
global trends into lively animations, making decades of data pop. Asian
countries, as colorful bubbles, float across the grid -- toward better
national health and wealth. Animated bell curves representing national
income distribution squish and flatten. In Rosling's hands, global
trends -- life expectancy, child mortality, poverty rates -- become
clear, intuitive and even playful. NEW: Download this talk in full SD resolution >>

Eleni
Gabre-Madhin outlines her ambitious vision to found the first
commodities market in Ethiopia. Her plan would create wealth, minimize
risk for farmers and turn the world's largest recipient of food aid into a
regional food basket. "There is no place in the world and no time in
history that small farmers have had to bear the burden of risk that
African farmers bear today," Gabre-Madhin says. "But I'm not
here to lament or wring my hands. I'm here to tell you that change is in
the air."
Eleni Gabre-Madhin is working to build
Ethiopia's first commodities market. Re-establishing the profit motive for
farmers, she believes, could help turn the world's largest recipient of
food aid into a regional food basket. Read

With
the same humor and humanity he exuded in An Inconvenient Truth,Al
Gore spells out 15 ways we can address climate change, from buying a
hybrid car to inventing a hotter brand name for global warming. First,
though, comes a hilarious set of stories from The New Gore, who turns out
to be a stand-up comedian. The former Vice President has plenty of joke
material, and he's funnier than you've ever seen him. Then he gets down to
grittier matters with a list of actions ordinary people can take to stem
the tide of global warming. His message: Doing something is easier than
you think.
Once the US Vice President, then star
of An Inconvenient Truth, now Nobel Peace Prize winner, Al Gore... Read

Musician
and activist Bono
accepts the 2005 TED Prize with a riveting talk, arguing that aid to
Africa isn't just another celebrity cause; it's a global emergency. He
argues passionately that mere charity won't solve the serious problems
facing the world's second-largest continent. The solution, he says, is
equal human rights. And it isn't just our moral obligation; it's an
economic and strategic necessity. He ends by unveiling his TED Prize
wishes, calling for TED's help to build a new social movement for Africa. Click

Emily
Oster, a University of Chicago economist,
looks at the stats on AIDS in Africa -- and comes up with a stunning
conclusion: Everything we know about AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa is wrong.
We look for root causes such as poverty and poor health care -- but we
also need to factor in, say, the price of coffee, and the routes of
long-haul truckers. In short, there is a lot we don't know; and our
assumptions about what we do know may keep us from finding the best way to
stop the disease.
Emily Oster, a University of Chicago economist, uses
the dismal science to rethink conventional... Read

As
E.O.
Wilson accepts his 2007 TED Prize, he makes a plea on behalf of his
constituents, the insects and small creatures, to learn more about our
biosphere. We know so little about nature, he says, that we're still
discovering tiny organisms indispensable to life; yet we're still steadily
destroying nature. Wilson identifies five grave threats to biodiversity (a
term he coined), using the acronym HIPPO, and makes his TED wish: that we
will work together on the Encyclopedia of Life, a web-based compendium of
data from scientists and amateurs on every aspect of the biosphere.
