ACTION TO OPPOSE MUKASEY'S CONFIRMATION BECAUSE OF TORTURE

Judge Michael B. Mukasey, President Bush's
nominee to replace Alberto Gonzalez as Attorney General, refuses to acknowledge
that waterboarding is a form of torture.
This
brutal practice, which dates back to the Spanish Inquisition, involves
immobilizing a person on their back and pouring water down their throat and
nose, causing a feeling of asphyxiation from drowning. It is
a barbaric and inhumane technique.
In
the years following 9/11, the Office of Attorney General was transformed from a
defender of human rights, the Constitution and the rule of law, to a guardian of
illegal and immoral activities.
The
former Attorney General, Alberto Gonzalez, gave legal approval for torture, wire
tapping, and the rescinding of Habeas Corpus. In
so doing, he put our troops in jeopardy and diminished our moral standing in the
world.
The
Attorney General's Office is in desperate need of transformation. The new
Attorney General must send a clear message that he or she will defend the rule
of law, maintain independence from the White House, and will not tolerate
torture.
Unfortunately,
Michael Mukasey's refusal to acknowledge the simple fact that waterboarding is
torture makes him unfit for the position of Attorney General.
Please
take a few minutes today to call your Senator and demand that he or she oppose
the confirmation of Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey. The Senate has an
opportunity to stand for principle and to begin the long and difficult process
of rebuilding
America
's moral standing in the world.
Let
them know we won't stand for another Attorney General who does not uphold the
laws and treaty agreements banning torture and other forms of cruel, inhumane,
and degrading treatment.

I'm
calling to urge the senator to vote 'NO' on Michael Mukasey's confirmation as
Attorney General. I am concerned about the issue of torture and I want our next
Attorney General to have a clear understanding that torture techniques, such as
waterboarding, are illegal and wrong.
Waterboarding
is torture and torture is unconstitutional. If Mr. Mukasey can't say that, he
shouldn't be Attorney General.
The
Senator must not endorse Mr. Mukasey's views on waterboarding by supporting his
confirmation. The world is paying attention to your vote and
so am I. A vote in favor of Mukasey is a vote in favor of torture.
