Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki, Libya's Secretary (Minister) of African Union
Affairs, was elected President of the sixty-fourth session of the United
Nations General Assembly on 10 June 2009.
“We
should work together to avert war through the administration of justice in
order to safeguard human lives and preserve human dignity," he said at
acceptance speech at the United Nations General Assembly on 10 June 2009.
"The
only war worth relentlessly fighting, with the participation of all, is that
against fatal diseases, poverty, hunger and illiteracy,” said the new
President of the United Nations General Assembly.
Dr.
Treki served as Libya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations three
times between 1982 to 1984 and has deep knowledge of the issues before the
world body where he also chaired the General Assembly’s Fourth Committee on
Decolonization and represented his country on the United Nations Commission on
Human Rights; from 1986 to 1990; and, most recently, in 2003.
He was
also a Vice-President of the General Assembly at its thirty-seventh session in
1982.
Dr.
Treki was previously Libya’s Ambassador to France between 1995 to 1999, and
the Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States in Cairo, Egypt
between 1991 to 1994.
Previous to that Dr. Treki was Libya's Foreign Minister
between 1977 to 1980.
Dr.
Treki had key involvement in the creation and development of the African Union
and has also played important roles in the mediation of African conflicts in
the Sudan, Chad, Eritrea, Ethipoia, Djibouti/Eritreas and in other regions
including Cyprus, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Philippines.
Dr.
Treki has been a leader of Libya’s diplomatic delegations many African
summits and important conferences such as the ministerial meetings of the
African Union Executive Council and the former Organization of African Unity.
Dr.
Treki also headed the Libyan delegation to summits and conferences of the
League of Arab States while also chairing the League’s Council of Ministers
between 1976 and 1977 and leading delegations to summits of the Organization
of Islamic Conferences and the Council of Islamic States.
He
also lead Libya’s delegation to ministerial meetings of the Non-Aligned
Movement and it’s 1979 Cuban summit conference.
Dr.
Treki has been presented with honorary doctorate degrees from universities in
Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States of America, and received important
decorations from governments, worldwide.
Dr.
Ali Abdussalam Treki was born Misrata, Libya, in 1938 and earned a
bachelor’s degree in history from Garyounes University, Benghazi, Libya, and
a doctorate in political history from Toulouse University, France. He is
fluent in Arabic, English and French. Dr. Treki is married with four children.

Assembly Calls for End to U.S. Embargo against Cuba

a resolution calling for an end to the economic,
commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United
States against Cuba. The vote on the resolution was 187 in
