As Asia
and the Pacific emerges from a tragic season of monsoons and droughts, alarming
news of receding glaciers in the Himalayas and struggles to bring improved water
supply and sanitation to its populations, can water politics be the solution?
Can the 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit, the G-8 and TICAD IV be
pivotal benchmarks to impress upon governments the need to make water and
sanitation a high regional priority? The Asia-Pacific Water Summit, to be held
in Beppu City, Oita, Japan, 3-4 December 2007, will be the first ever “water
summit” with the participation of heads of governments of the Asia-Pacific
region.
On
the occasion of the Science and Technology in Society Forum, Mrs.
Margaret Catley-Carlson (Chair of
Global Water Partnership) and Mr. Frank R. Rijsberman (Director, Water and Climate Adaptation
Initiatives, Google.org), are convening in Kyoto and will discuss these water
and sanitation issues with the press in a roundtable breakfast event.
