U.N./
- 22 September 2007 – At
the United Nations last Tuesday, after six years in office, Bush was saying
hello when everybody else was saying goodbye.
With
sixteen months to go in his tenure, he delivered a speech in which he
suddenly called the UN "this great institution".
He
said, "The United States is committed to a strong and vibrant United
Nations." He praised the UN for carrying out "noble efforts" to
free the world's peoples from hunger and disease.
And
America, he now claimed, is today collaborating "with the United Nations to
alleviate immediate needs... working to stop the proliferation of weapons of
mass destruction... (and) confronting the challenges of energy security, and
environmental quality, and climate change."
This
is the same man who from his first days in office dissed the UN, repudiated many
of the treaties which the UN membership ratified, warned that the UN would go
the way of the League of Nations, defied the UN Security Council in order to
invade Iraq, appointed an anti-UN zealot John Bolton as our American envoy to
the body, refused to pay up America's peacekeeping obligations, and generally
treated the organization as a useless global appendage.
In
fact, what he should have issued was a public apology for his contemptuous
treatment of this extraordinary assembly and conceded that the the UN over the
past few years has assisted the US in trying to bring peace to Iraq, in forcing
Iran to abandon its nuclear program, in getting Syrian troops out of Lebanon, in
placing an international UN force in Lebanon after the Israel-Lebanon war, in
inserting UN troops into Darfur and so on -- all has which has proven that the
UN actually has advanced US national security rather than hindered it.
But
a small man is not able to make such large gestures.
