DEATH
OF ARTHUR ROSS

- 11 September 2007 – We are saddened to inform you that our dear friend and Vice Chairman, Arthur
Ross, died peacefully in his sleep this morning at his home on Long Island.
This
is a devastating loss for all of us who care about the United Nations and peace
in the world. Arthur's energy and optimism about that world body was virtually
unmatched.
His extraordinary instinct to recognize and receive talented
diplomats and international civil servants made a significant difference as many
Secretaries General will affirm.
He and Janet befriended and entertained
scores of UN officials over the years introducing them to New Yorkers they may
have never met otherwise.
His generosity in the last two decades to
institutions such as UNA and the World Federation of UNA's was unprecedented
because he believed so deeply in the work we have been doing in support of a
stronger United Nations.
I hope you will join me in sending an expression of sympathy to his widow
Janet Ross and to his son and your fellow Board member, Alfred and to his other
son, Clifford. We will inform you later of how best you can forward
your condolences.
Arthur's life had been a full one. He was always looking ahead, trying to
build a better, more sane and more beautiful future for the world, for New York,
for his friends and for his family.
His gifts to the arts organizations, his
legendary support for Central Park and love for trees, his support for an entire
range of organizations dealing with foreign affairs in addition to UNA and his
lively attention to all aspects of the world around him were trade marks of this
remarkable and brilliant man.
Arthur's success in business was a reflection of
that same intense intellectual engagement, and forward looking strategy that
enabled him to be such a creative and successful philanthropist.
