THE
SCHLESINGER JOURNALS: UPDATE:

UNITED NATIONS - / MaximsNews Network /
- 05 November 2007 -- The
just-published Journals of the late historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr covering the
years from 1952-2000 have apparently struck a chord in America, according to the
latest bookstore tabulations. The Journals are now a national best seller – an
unique achievement for personal and political diaries.
The reason seems to
be that they have tapped into a
vein of nostalgia for those earlier times when the United States had
larger-than-life personalities ranging from Adlai Stevenson to John and Robert
Kennedy, Jackie Onassis, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and many others, in its
midst, whose flair and progressive ideas dominated the social and political
scene.
Mr. Schlesinger’s
intimate recollections of these individuals has earned extraordinary praise from
reviewers around the country:
-
The New York
Times’ Janet Maslin called the Journals “moving and monumental.”
-
In the Los
Angeles Times, historian Douglas Brinkley labeled them “a deeply
revelatory and no-holds-barred tour de force tome.”
-
The editor of
Newsweek Magazine, Jon Meacham, wrote in a front-page review in the Sunday
Washington Post book section, that “it will be a long time before we see
another collection of journals as rich, as fascinating and as illuminating
as Schlesinger’s.”
-
Chief political
reporter, Marty Nolan, in the Boston Globe, said
“for those who wish to understand the politics of the past five
decades, Journals is essential.”
-
The Journals
provide a direct link for Americans to the spacious ideals and remarkable
figures who guided and influenced our nation throughout much of the second
half of the 20th century.
