U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Dr. Hans Blix and Ambassador William J.
vanden Heuvel addressed a gathering of friends and supporters of the United
Nations on Monday at a luncheon held by the Friends of the World Federation of
United Nations Associations.

In
his statement, the Secretary-General appreciated the role of the World
Federation of UN Associations and talked about the value of the UN’s
engagement with civil society.
He
paid tribute to Mr. Arthur Ross, Honorary President of the Friends of WFUNA, for
his unwavering commitment to the United Nations, and to Dr. Hans Blix for his
exemplary work for the international community both at the UN, and now as
President of the World Federation of UN Associations.
Secretary-General
Ban concluded with some thoughts on the future of the United Nations.
Guests
at the event included eight members of the Secretary-General’s new cabinet, UN
Ambassadors, business leaders from countries including
Brazil
,
Canada
and
China
, NGO representatives, and prominent philanthropists.

The
diverse group was representative of the relevance that the UN has to the lives
of people from all sectors of society.
Established
in 1946, the World Federation of UN Associations has consultative status with
the UN Economic and Social Council and formal relations with many UN
Departments, Agencies and programs as well as the UN Global Compact.
The
highest decision-making body of the World Federation, the Plenary Assembly is
held at least every 3 years to set the strategic policy direction and elect its
officers and Executive Committee.
Dr.
Hans Blix was elected to be President of the organization at the thirty-eighth
Plenary Assembly in
Argentina
in November of last year and Ambassador vanden Heuvel is the Chairman of the
Friends of the World Federation of United Nations Associations.
Ambassador
William H. Luers, president of the UNA/USA, was the Chairman of the Luncheon.
