June 2007 –
This week over 600 pairs
of shoes are being painted in five
New York City
schools. These vibrant and creative Art Miles Shoes of Hope will join hundreds
of other shoes painted across the country at a display for World Environment Day
at UN Headquarters, outdoor plaza in
New York
on 5 June 2007 at 12 PM.
|
The
World Environment Day event is being hosted by the World Federation of
United Nations Associations, and marks the launch of a partnership project
between the World Federation, the International Education and Resource
Network and Channel Thirteen called “(OF)2: Our Footprints, Our
Future”.
Through
(OF)2, young people around the world will use on-line tools to measure their
current carbon footprint and to develop strategies for reducing their carbon
usage.
The
goal is for one million students around the world to join together with
their families, their schools, and their communities to reduce the total
global carbon footprint.

|
The
Art Miles shoes of Hope are a visual representation of the collaboration and
commitment that young people around the world are making to reduce their own
carbon footprint and decrease their negative effects on the environment.
The
shoes will be placed along the public installation piece “Uniting Painting”
by famed artist Ranan Lurie that runs from inside the UN building down to the
East River and over to Roosevelt Island.
The
shoes painted in
New York
were mostly on the theme of climate change.
The
painting process inspired the students to reflect on how they can make a
difference to help save the environment not just for their own futures, but for
the futures of those living in developing countries.
“This
activity is helping the students to understand the link between poverty and
climate change," said Joanne Tawfilis, Co-Founder Art Miles Mural
Project.
"The
student painters included a message in each shoe with their commitments for
reducing their carbon production, addressed to its recipient,” she said.
After
the event, the shoes will be shipped to disadvantaged children in
Africa
through Art Miles Shoes of Hope - the NGO that originated the shoe painting
program.
A
thousand pairs of shoes were donated for this project by New York Knicks point
guard Stephon Marbury of Starbury Shoes, who will be making an appearance at the
event.
This
event is being sponsored by the UN Environment Programme
and the UN Office of Sport for Development and Peace. It will be a part
of a full day of festivities including the “Fishes Feed Us” performance by
30 fifth-graders from PS124 in Chinatown/NYC (11am), and an appearance by Bindi
Erwin (11:45am).
Participating
Schools in NYC include:
Bronx

Charter
School

Sinatra
School
of the Arts (Queens), High School of Art and Design (
