U.N./ - 28
July 2007
Concern at the United Nations is mounting about
the Afghanistan hostage situation involving the South
Korean aid workers being held by the Taliban now
that the Korean pastor has been killed.
"If
any more are killed, it might force some aid agencies to
pull out of Afghanistan and thus deny millions of Afghanis
the vital help they need," said one long-time U.N.
activist.
Baek
Jong-chun, an envoy of the South Korean president, is
scheduled to meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai today.
At first
the Taliban demanded that South Korea withdraw its troops
from Afghanistan or they would kill the hostages.
The
government in Seoul then reaffirmed its intention to
remove Korean troops from Afghanistan by the end of the
year as had been planned.
Then the
militants changed their demands and asked for the release
of Taliban prisoners.
