STANLEY
FOUNDATION: NEW REPORTS EXAMINE MIDDLE EAST SECURITY:
17/12/2007
UNITED NATIONS - / MaximsNews Network /
- 17 December 2007 -- Two
new Stanley Foundation reports examine Middle East security issues facing states
in the Gulf and Levant subregions.
The
Future of Gulf Security report continues the foundation’s multiyear focus
on security issues facing this critical subregion. The project identified
perceived security threats and trends, encouraged creative thinking on
confidence-building measures to alleviate tensions and determined how Gulf
states might move toward more sustainable, subregional security frameworks.
The
resulting summary report is the outcome of two roundtable dialogues with
officials, policy experts and academics from Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Russia, Turkey,
Pakistan, India, Asia, Europe, and the United States.
For its
Levant Security project, the foundation spent ten months looking at conflict
involving Lebanon and Syria from several different angles.
The
Levant project’s summary report makes several recommendations, including:
• Opening
a new round of negotiations between Syria and Israel over the status of the
Golan Heights and Shebaa Farms.
• US assistance with the Iraqi refugee/migration situation in Syria,
Lebanon, and Jordan.
• Rebalancing US policy to better reflect the region’s changing power
dynamics, including serious consideration to how the Iranian-US rivalry may
create an environment that supports the growth of radical groups.
