CHINA FEELS EUROPE NEEDS STRATEGIC VISION AND A UNIFIED VOICE TO PROSPER:

feels that Europe's lack of strategic vision hampers its credibility in world
affairs, according to a Chatham House report published recently.
The
EU will need to settle internal disputes and present a united voice if it is to
maintain a strong negotiating position with China over the next 20 years.
The EU
is becoming an increasingly important trading and economic partner for China.
Beijing considers the euro a 'most impressive achievement' and believes Europe's
position in the future will depend upon a more robust common defence strategy -
the UK's role will be vital in achieving this.
Over the
coming decade, three factors will be important in determining China's economic
view of Europe; the Chinese commercial relationship with the US, growing ties
with other major Asian economies, and the evolution of the Chinese domestic
economy.
The
European example is a source of inspiration for regional co-operation,
especially in Chinese dealings with Japan.
The
report states that China regards itself and Europe as the two 'core
civilizations' of the world, viewing the US as 'marginal'. Europe remains
culturally attractive, and is not perceived to be in decline.
This is
a unique common ground for understanding between China and Europe in the coming
years.
