EU PRESIDENCY DECLARATION ON SIERRA LEONE ELECTIONS: 20/8/2007 (MaximsNews.com,

- 20 August 2007 -The
EU welcomes the peaceful holding of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections
in Sierra Leone on 11 August 2007.
These
elections are an important step towards the consolidation of peace and democracy
in a region that until recently has suffered from violent conflicts.
The
EU congratulates the people of Sierra Leone for an orderly election and the
National Electoral Commission, for its capable leadership in their organisation.
The
EU will follow closely, depending on the electoral results, the second round of
the presidential election in the country, if a second round is needed.
The
EU electoral observation mission on the ground attested that these elections
were generally well administrated, peaceful and competitive.
The
EU will continue to follow closely the post-election period in the country and
expresses its hopes that Sierra Leone will conclude this electoral process in
peace and in respect of the democratic principles.
The
EU calls on all parties and supporters to await the certified results patiently
and exercise tolerance upon their announcement, and to resolve any disputes
which arise according to established legal mechanisms.
Together with ECOWAS and the UN, the EU will continue to engage for a peaceful
and prosperous future in Sierra Leone.
The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of
Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and
potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and
the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European
Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan
and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of
the Stabilisation and Association Process.
