UNITED NATIONS - / www.MaximsNews.com@ U.N./ - 15 August 2007 – Sir Emyr Jones Parry, Britain's ambassador to the United Nations departed New York on 15 August 2007 on retirement from the UK Diplomatic Service.

The ambassador has been the UK Permanent Representative to the UN since 2003 where he has dealt with many difficult and important issues of war and peace in the Security Council.

Ambassador Parry recently sat down with CBS UN correspondent Frank Ucciardo to talk about some of the those key issues as well as his own career and the future of the United Nations.

1996-97 - Deputy Political Director foremostly, responsible also for Balkans and Aegean policy

1993-96 - Minister and Deputy Head of Mission, Madrid

1989-93 - Head of European Community Department External, Foreign and Commonwealth Office

1987-89 - Deputy Chef de Cabinet to the President of the European Parliament

1979-87 - Worked on EU affairs in Foreign and Commonwealth Office and in the UK Representation to the EU in Brussels

1974-79 - Second later First Secretary (Political) later First Secretary (Economic), Ottawa

1973 - Joined Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Personal

Sir Emyr was born on 21 September 1947 in Carmarthen, Wales.

He was educated at Gwendraeth Grammar School. He attended University College Cardiff, where he read Theoretical Physics. He subsequently gained a PhD in Polymer Physics at St Catharine's College, University of Cambridge.

Sir Emyr is married to Lady Jones Parry (née Lynn Noble) and they have 2 sons, Paul and Mark.
