"Diplomacy and diplomats are sometimes ridiculed.
Diplomats are said to be people who 'think twice before saying nothing,'"
said Dr. Hans Blix in a
speech to the UNA-Spain meeting in Barcelona last week as he discussed the
Middle East.
"However,
whether on the world stage or in the closed circle of the family – diplomacy
is the art of finding common ground and accommodation without anyone losing
face....
"Finding
accommodation requires more than an ambition to avoid conflict. It
requires solid knowledge of relevant data and good understanding of existing
differences,” said Blix.
Since he became President of The World Federation
of the United Nations Association, Dr Blix has actively participated in UNA
events in Europe and the
United States
.
Earlier, Blix met with the new
U.N. Secretary-General
Ban Ki-moon in New York to review ways of strengthening relations between the
U.N. and the emerging global civil society.
"I am committed to
enabling people everywhere to understand the importance of international law as
the basis for cooperation and the convening power of the United Nations in
bringing people together to address the threats that are truly global and that
affect us all," said Blix.
The goal of the World Federation is to have a UNA in every UN member state by 2009, when its
39th Plenary Assembly will be hosted by the UNA-Republic of Korea in Seoul.
Today there are United Nations
Associations in 102 member states of the UN, engaged in education, outreach and
awareness building about the ideals and work of the United Nations for peace and
security, human rights and sustainable development.
Blix, Chairman of the
Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission, was elected to be the President of the
World Federation at the organization's 38th Plenary Assembly in Buenos Aires in November 2006.
The Assembly also established
WFUNA-Youth, issued the Buenos Aires Declaration, and a series of resolutions on
issues such as the Millennium Development Goals, Iraq, creating a WMD Free Zone
in the Middle East, the Responsibility to Protect, a UN Parliamentary Assembly,
U.S. relations with Mexico and Cuba and UN reform. (See Outcomes of the Plenary HERE.)
That meeting was attended by Mr. Pang
Sen, Chairman of the Executive Committee; Ms. Pera Wells, Secretary-General;
Ambassador vanden Heuvel, President of the Friends of WFUNA; and Mr. Henrik
Salander, Secretary-General of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission.

The World Federation

1946 as a peoples' movement in support of the United Nations.
