"Empowering
Black males to reach their full
potential is the most serious economic

Through
the National Urban League's Equality Index, the study provides a statistical
measurement of equality gaps that exist between African Americans and mainstream
America
in five areas -- education, economics,
health, civic engagement and social justice.
In
addition to presenting the findings, National
Urban League
president Marc H. Morial, among others, will offer public policy recommendations
to remedy the disparities highlighted in the report.
It
will be followed by a panel discussion of the report’s authors moderated by XM
radio personality and activist Joe Madison.
The
National
Urban League
has been releasing its annual The
State of Black America
since 1976, but 2007 marks the first year in which
the report will be distributed nationally as a trade book to more than 2,500
bookstores, retail and online outlets through Beckham Publications Group, a
minority-owned publisher based in Silver Spring, MD.
Established
in 1910, The Urban League is the nation's oldest and largest community-based
movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and
social mainstream.
Today,
the National
Urban League, headquartered in New York City, spearheads the
non-partisan efforts of its local affiliates.
There
are over 100 local affiliates of the National
Urban League located in 35 states
and the District of Columbia providing direct services to more than two million
people nationwide through programs, advocacy and research.
