NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE TO RELEASE "STATE OF BLACK AMERICA 2007" ON 17 APRIL, NATIONAL PRESS CLUB, WASHINGTON  (MaximsNews.com, U.N.)

UNITED NATIONS - / www.MaximsNews.com, UN/ -  06 April 2007 -- The National Urban League will unveil its annual State of Black America at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on 17 April 2007 at 12:30 PM, EST.

This year’s report, entitled The State of Black America 2007: Portrait of the Black Male, will focus upon the plight of Black men in the United States and include essays by Dr. Michael Eric Dyson and Marian Wright Edelman, among others, as well as a forward by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

"Empowering Black males to reach their full potential is the most serious economic and civil rights challenge we face today,"  said Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, former two-term mayor of New Orleans and a columnist for MaximsNews.com, An Independent Voice from the United Nations.

Through the National Urban League's Equality Index, the study provides a statistical measurement of equality gaps that exist between African Americans and mainstream America in five areas -- education, economics, health, civic engagement and social justice.

In addition to presenting the findings, National Urban League president Marc H. Morial, among others, will offer public policy recommendations to remedy the disparities highlighted in the report.

It will be followed by a panel discussion of the report’s authors moderated by XM radio personality and activist Joe Madison.

The National Urban League has been releasing its annual The State of Black America since 1976, but 2007 marks the first year in which the report will be distributed nationally as a trade book to more than 2,500 bookstores, retail and online outlets through Beckham Publications Group, a minority-owned publisher based in Silver Spring, MD.

Established in 1910, The Urban League is the nation's oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream.

Today, the National Urban League, headquartered in New York City, spearheads the non-partisan efforts of its local affiliates.

There are over 100 local affiliates of the National Urban League located in 35 states and the District of Columbia providing direct services to more than two million people nationwide through programs, advocacy and research.
