April 2007 –
The
GAVI Alliance has just
announced that Andrew Maguire will be the new executive director of The GAVI
Fund Campaign for Child Immunization to raise private
U.S. funding for child vaccines for use in the world’s 75 poorest countries.
The
GAVI Fund Campaign for Child Immunization encourages leaders and visionary
individuals to help GAVI address one of the world’s most glaring injustices:
to provide new life-saving vaccines and basic health care to the world's poorest
children.
The GAVI Alliance (Global Alliance
for Vaccines and Immunization) (www.gavialliance.org)
was originally formed with a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation.
It
has gone on to secure support from 17 donor governments and together it has
probably helped save more than two million lives.
The
work of GAVI is critical to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal
on child health, that calls for reducing childhood mortality by two-thirds by
the year 2015.
Every
year more than 10 million children die before reaching the age of five and it is
estimated that 2.5 million of those deaths could be prevented with currently
available or new vaccines.
The
GAVI Alliance includes partners of developing countries and donor governments,
the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the World Bank, the vaccine
industry in both the industrialized and developing regions, research and
technical agencies, NGOs, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Andrew
Maguire, Ph.D., has a long and distinguished career in public service and
international affairs that includes membership in the U.S. Congress, a member of
the U.S. Delegation to the U.N. General Assembly and key NGO leadership
positions.
He
was elected as a Democrat from New Jersey to the U.S. House of Representatives
from the 7th district of New Jersey in 1974 and served three two-year terms.
And
he was a member of the United States
Delegation to the United Nations General Assembly for five sessions while with
the U.S. Department of State.
He
served as Advisor on Political and Security Affairs with the U.S. State
Department's Mission
to the United Nations where he focused on U.S.
policy in the Middle East and
Africa.
More
recently he has served as CEO of EnterpriseWorks Worldwide and vice president of
the World Resources Institute.
"We
are fortunate to have someone of
Andy Maguire's immense talents and distinguished background join the GAVI
Alliance," said
Julian Lob-Levyt, executive secretary of the GAVI
Alliance.
"Dr.
Maguire brings with him a history of using innovative and sound business
practices to catalyze the capacity and performance of not-for-profit
organizations in the
United States
and other countries. As executive of The GAVI Fund Campaign for Child
Immunization, Dr. Maguire’s leadership will be integral in our efforts to
obtain additional resources for global immunization."
Commenting
on his new position, Maguire said, "Working to save the lives of children
in developing countries through immunization is a great yet humbling assignment.
GAVI is amazing because the Alliance and its partners will immunize most of the
world's at-risk children in a very few years on a scale that is
unprecedented."
"It
is unacceptable that 27 million children still go without immunization every
year, putting them at great risk of dying from easily preventable
diseases," he emphasized.
Dr.
Maguire was president and CEO of EnterpriseWorks Worldwide, a not-for-profit
development corporation helping to alleviate poverty through economic growth in
the developing world.
As
vice president for policy affairs at the World Resources Institute he was vice
president for policy affairs and directed public policy strategies on global
environment issues while working closely with bilateral and multilateral aid
agencies, international organizations, and business leaders.
"We
are very excited to have
Andy Maguire
working on behalf of GAVI,” said Alice P. Albright, GAVI Alliance CFO and
head of the Washington
office. “His considerable skills as a policy maker and leader in the field of
global development will bolster our efforts to accelerate access to life-saving
vaccines for the world’s poorest children."
Dr.
Maguire received his bachelor’s degree in religion from
Oberlin
College
and his doctorate in government from
Harvard
University. Later in 1983, he was also a fellow at the
Institute of Politics, John F. Kennedy
School of Government, Harvard University.
He
is the author of two major books: Bordering on Trouble: Resources and
Politics in Latin America and Toward Uhuru in Tanzania: The Politics of
Participation as well as numerous articles on international public policy
issues. -- by Dr.
