KILLING
U.N. PEACEKEEPERS
(MaximsNews.com,
UN)

UNITED NATIONS - / www.MaximsNews.com
UN/
- 27 July 2006
- The
U.N. Security Council
today voiced shock and
distress at the killing
of four unarmed United
Nations peacekeepers in
southern
Lebanon
and called on Israeli to
conduct a full
investigation.
The
peacekeepers represented
the governments of
Austria, Canada, China
and
Finland; diplomats at
the UN today shared
considerable concern
that the incident may
reduce the willingness
of other countries to
participate in future
international
peacekeeping forces in
the region.
The peacekeepers were
killed when their post
was struck in a direct
hit by the IDF early on
Tuesday evening, despite
repeated requests during
the afternoon from
UNIFIL officials to
Israel
to protect that
particular post from
attack.
The UN
Interim Force in Lebanon
(UNIFIL)
reported today (statement
) that in the past 24
hours there have been
three new incidents of
firing close to UN
positions from the
Israeli side and also
that Hezbollah has fired
from the vicinity of
four UN positions.
The Council called on
Israel
to “conduct a
comprehensive inquiry”
and take into account
information gathered by
the UN, and to quickly
publish the results.
Ambassador Jean-Marc de
la Sablière of France,
this month’s Council
president, read out a statement
that "Israel
and all concerned
parties must comply
fully with their
obligations” under
international
humanitarian law that
protects UN and other
peacekeepers and ensure
they are not
attacked.
The
Council also expressed
“deep concern for
Lebanese and Israeli
civilian casualties and
sufferings, the
destruction of civil
infrastructure and the
rising number” of
displaced people in
Lebanon, now estimated
to be over
500,000.
Kofi
Annan accepted an
expression of sorrow
from
Israel's Prime Minister
Ehud Olmert. Three
of the military
observers from the UNIFIL
post have been confirmed
dead, and one has not
yet been recovered.
