IN JERUSALEM, UN CRISIS TEAM MEETS ISRAELI FOREIGN MINISTER (MaximsNews.com, UN)  By Max Stamper

UNITED NATIONS - / www.MaximsNews.com UN/ - 19 July 2006 - The UN Middle East Crisis Team met with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzippi Livni in Jerusalem after high level discussions in Beirut with Lebanese counterparts.  A member of the United Nations team said that talks with senior Israeli officials were “good, intensive and productive” and the dialogue continues.

“The UN delegation has presented concrete ideas on how to resolve the current crisis and reach an end of hostilities,” said Terje Roed-Larsen, member of the UN Crisis Team led by Vijay Nambiar and includes Alvaro de Soto following their meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister.

“The Government of Israel will now deliberate on these ideas and so will their counterparts in Lebanon,” he said, while adding that the dialogue would continue with both Israel and Lebanon continues.

Mr. Roed-Larsen said that to share details of the talks at this time would be “counter-productive”.

“But,” he quickly added, “I can assure you that the Secretary-General and his team are working very hard on specific ideas to get us out of the current crisis.”

Kofi Annan, in Brussels, has been addressing the Middle East crisis at the recent G8 Summit in Saint Petersburg, said the UN team is working day and night with both parties to end the hostilities.

“They want to see the soldiers released, they want to see the Hizbollah shelling stop, they want to see the Israel shelling and bombardment stop, and they are in discussions with the parties,” he said.   ~~~
